Who we are.
The Educated Zookeeper is a professional organization dedicated to enhancing animal care by creating networking opportunities for zookeepers through workshops, tours, and informal receptions. The Educated Zookeeper depends on professional zookeepers to facilitate experiences and learning. Initiatives are provided by members and for members. The Educated Zookeeper is a volunteer-based group committed to the core value that zookeeping is a talent taught best by experience sharing.
What does a tour day look like?
Generally, tours host 10 – 20 professionals (maximum number determined in advance by the hosting facility) from the surrounding zoos and aquariums for one day of behind the scenes tours. The current Mid-Atlantic Regional Group consists of appx 400 individuals from 30 facilities/agencies (including USFWS, USGS, State DNRs, etc.). Nationally the group has several hundred members.
There are no costs to members to join (just one year working as a professional in a facility with a valid email address is required). The group exists solely through the hard work of many zookeeper volunteers.
